Who helps make community happen?
Every community is shaped by people who make, teach, preserve, repair, organize, share and pass knowledge forward. Some may call themselves artists, makers or historians. Others may never use those words, even though their skills, generosity and experience have made a lasting difference.
Made By is creating the Creative & Cultural Contributors Registry—a growing record of the people whose creativity, knowledge and community work help shape Kawartha Lakes.
This is not a ranking, an award or simply a business directory. It is a way to recognize the breadth of creative and cultural life across our communities, make important knowledge more visible and help meaningful connections continue.
There is more than one way to make community.
The registry may include artists, makers, craftspeople, educators, mentors, historians, heritage practitioners, knowledge-holders, cultural organizers, volunteers and community builders. It can also include people whose work does not fit neatly beneath any of those titles.
Participation does not depend on having a business, formal training, public recognition or a professional creative practice. Someone may sell their work, share it freely, teach others, preserve a tradition or contribute quietly within their family or community.
If a person has created something, preserved something or connected people through creativity, culture, learning, knowledge or community life, Made By would like to know about them.
What can the registry make possible?
The registry will help Made By better understand the people, skills, knowledge and creative practices found throughout Kawartha Lakes. Over time, it may help us:
- connect people with shared interests or complementary knowledge;
- identify stories for research, oral histories and the Made By Journal;
- develop exhibitions, workshops and community programs;
- recognize people whose contributions might otherwise go undocumented;
- preserve knowledge and support its movement between generations; and
- help residents and visitors discover the breadth of creative and cultural life in this region.
The registry begins with documentation. Any public profile, interview, exhibition, program or other opportunity would be discussed separately and would proceed only with the person’s knowledge and permission.
Help us build the community record.
You can tell us about your own work, knowledge or community contribution—or introduce us to someone you believe Made By should know about. You do not need to know every detail, and the person does not need to fit neatly within a particular title or category.
Submitting information does not create an automatic public listing. If you tell us about someone else, your suggestion will be treated as a starting point for research and connection. Made By will contact the person, where possible, before publishing information about them or inviting them to participate in an interview, program, exhibition or other opportunity.
