It's Never Just a Dress

This digital exhibit extends Made By: Kawartha Lakes’ LEX 2026 fair exhibit, “For Us, It’s Never Just an Object.” At the fair, five objects invite visitors to follow the questions, people and connections that begin with something tangible. The objects are not endpoints. They are evidence—and openings.

The Daisy Brand Reynolds panel begins with a small lavender dress. Daisy made it in the mid-1940s for her granddaughter Marilyn Reynolds. The dress was packed away and later worn by Marilyn’s daughter Barbara in the early 1970s, then by Barbara’s daughter Grace in the early 2000s. One handmade garment entered three childhoods.

Following that dress leads outward: into smocking and home sewing, women’s skill and labour, a family in Essex, the British Home Child system, migration to Canada, and the ways memory travels—or fails to travel—through a family.

This is not a complete biography of Daisy. We do not know everything because she did not speak about her childhood, because institutional records were not created for her descendants, and because ordinary family histories were not always written down. Those gaps are not an apology or a family failure. They are evidence of what silence, stigma and time
can take from a family. They are also why we record what remains now—even the stories that are difficult to tell or hear.
